Web 3.0 vs. The Metaverse

Both are famous to be recognised as the internet of future, but not be recognised as similar entities. Current internet version is much advanced and different from the slow, text focused one, while the upcoming internet would be it’s different and powerful version. To clear the predictions of how the internet would look like in the near future, many people have used the term “web3.0” for the same and “the metaverse”, but these are two different concepts.

Detail Analysis Of Web 3.0

Web 3.0 is focused towards a major shift as to how internet would now be used from Web1.0 (yesterday’s internet) to Web 2.0 (today’s internet), thereby helping in describing theses generations.
Where Web 1.0 was the version of internet which was there between 1991 and 2004. It was a place where information could be revealed and the individuals who were involved in building of content was dominated by the people consuming the same. Web 2.0 on the other hand had successfully defined the version of internet which had its focus on user created content. Through this way we had initiated our interaction through social media posts on Facebook, share and create videos on YouTube, leaving comments, everywhere.
To clear the picture of how Web 3.0 would look, people could till now make predictions through the predictions of Gavin Wood given in 2014 (co-creator) of Ethereum blockchain, who had estimated that internet of future would be based on the blockchain technology. Where blockchain as explained in earlier article that data would be decentralised rather than being saved on central servers being owned by single entity. The entire network of computers which would be owned by individuals, each would entail particular copy of information too.
While concerning it with money, specially cryptocurrency, the very used-to blockchain application, this is the difference between bank tracing one’s account working on its specific server, while network of computers tracking it on shared ledger. So, the financial transactions are rightly being discussed as one simple application for blockchain networks, although they could also work as distributed storage for any sort of data and if in case Web3.0 has to rule out, then it would be profoundly known to be serving as the ‘backbone of future internet’. This clearly means that inspite of spending time on websites (Facebook, Google, etc.) which own the data and content which is created, one would end up using search engines as well as social networks and other apps using blockchain for controlling the data.

Early Signs of Web 3.0

The Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and the decentralised web browsers are the early signs of Web 3.0 as NFTs that use blockchain technology for assisting the artists to distribute and monetise their digital creations in newer ways. Also the decentralised web browsers tend to block the ads and allow users for choosing the appropriate website so as to access their data.

About Metaverse

Where the Web 3.0 is about knowing who is going to control and own tomorrow’s internet, Metaverse on the other hand focuses on the manner in which users are going to feel the internet of future. As at present, many of us tend to go through the apps with the help of going through the screen of smartphones, computers, and tablets. But Metaverse focuses on using the virtual reality (VR) technology for entering the internet tomorrow, thereby going through virtual worlds in form of digital avatars. Therefore, these virtual worlds are actually a metaverse and so many of them could find various online Fortnite, Decentraland, Horizon worlds, sort of virtual game which is made by Meta(parent company of Facebook). Even one important thing to be noted about Metaverse is that most of them are the gaming platforms which are covered by pre-teens, and in case the concept moves in the correct direction then we would be headed towards a major shift of the manner of working online and socialising self would also change. For example, inspite conducting video conferencing via zoom, one could don a VR headset and eventually engagewith their avatars in virtual world. Also apart from chatting with friends on Facebook Messenger, the group of friends would likely to meet in crowd of virtual music festival, where the real life musicians tend to perform as digital avatars.

Connectivity Of Web3.0 and Metaverse

As these both are different concepts so they are not the competing version of upcoming internet – one, both or neither would lead to accomplishment and might overlap as well. The digital artist would also tend to make an outfit for an avatar so as to wear the same in metaverse, For instance, making money by auctioning it off in addition with an NFT. Therefore, this would allow proper ownership of the outfit for the buyer and in case other people copy the same, then also their avatars would be wearing knock offs as technically.
But it is much expected that we at last use the Web 3.0 which could be experienced as today’s internet via computers and smartphones than the VR headsets. To this, Intel company has estimated that computers would require to be 1000 times much efficient for supporting the metaverse and that they are awaiting for someone for releasing a comfortable and in reach VR headset.
More clear explanation of their difference could be as Facebook is a centralised company Web 3.0 targets to use or waste a lot and as discussed earlier had changed its name to “Meta” for signaling its intention for building and also on monetary base conducting the metaverse. But metaverses as Decentraland, each is build and is owned by its users.

Crux

Considering both Metaverse and Web 3.0, none of them is close to the screen-based internet of today which is full of competing corporations. To this, Twitter’s founder Jack Dorsey had bandy words about a decentralised internet would not necessitate user’s power in the manner Web 3.0 supporters had predicted- but in actual, the power would go away from BigTech and would go away to the venture capitalists who tend to invest in blockchain apps.
Still inspite of overcoming the technological hurdles from peoples life, still they would like to experience their internet the manner in which they tend to do today. To this, an interview was done with Babylon Bee by Elon Musk and SpaceX CEO, “ I don’t see someone strapping a friggin screen to their face all day.”
Basically after learning about both Web 3.0 and Metaverse,we can say that, tomorrow’s internet would be majorly as today’s, but with newer elements from both Web 3.0 and Metaverse. Hence, it’s clear about what should exactly be expected from both.
